How to slice in Cricut Design Space

A helpful guide how to slice objects & fonts.

Splitting an image can help remove unwanted objects from a design or to create a unique touch! Here’s how you can easily split an image using the slice tool in Cricut Design Space.

Work with two layers

e slicing tool only works if you are working with two layers at a time. This can be any layer of an object, a file or an object. You can see in the image below that when you select two objects, the slice option becomes available in the toolbar to the right.

If you create and select a third object, the slice tool will no longer available (see image below).

To use the slice tool you can only work with two layers at a time. Proceed by placing one of the objects on top of the other – in a way that you would like to have that shape cut out. Mark both objects and press Slice.

You will now see that you have a third layer in the toolbar to the right. This is the layer that you just sliced out. If you move the object you placed on the top, you will, like in the example below, see a layer with a duplicated version of the star and the circle layer will have a cut out star in the middle.

Using slice with fonts

This tool also works great with fonts! Let’s say you would like to have cut out a letter in each star. To do this, create two text boxes on the star objects. Choose a font and letter of your liking, mark one of the stars – and press Slice. Repeat for the second star.

Remember that you cannot slice both stars at the same time, as you only can slice two objects at a time.

When the letters are cut out, you will see that you now have more layers available in the toolbar to the right.

When you remove the C and the F you will have two stars with a cut out lettering.

Using the slice tool is a great way to easily combine multiple objects, letters and shapes into one new object, or to remove unwanted parts. When you are satisfied with your design, you can go ahead and cut it. Happy Crafting!
